Dr. Prateek Bhatnagar did the world’s first successful coronary bypass surgery in a rotated heart (mesocardia) on 17th September 2016. Did India’s first re-redo (3rd time) coronary bypass surgery using beating heart total arterial revascularization in 2005. Did Hyderabad’s first Multivessel Awake bypass surgery (without using a ventilator) in 2005.
Dr. Bhatnagar is one of the world’s leading experts in beating heart coronary bypass surgery, “Y” grafting surgery, BIMA (Bilateral Internal Mammary Artery) coronary bypass surgery and total arterial revascularization in bypass surgery. He established these techniques in Hyderabad and demonstrated their safe, secure and advantageous use over the last 18 years. He has been associated with more than 12000 heart surgeries till date.
Dr. Bhatnagar is doing almost 100% coronary bypass surgeries on the beating heart (one of the top figures in India and abroad). Surgical success 99.2%, one of the best internationally. He regularly organizes Live Symposia and Conferences on BIMA surgery - the best technique of coronary bypass surgery. He also pioneered the technique of Awake bypass surgery in Hyderabad, by which a patient can undergo CABG without being put on a ventilator. He has been a faculty in national & international conferences and has delivered lectures. He has more than 20-year experience in heading cardiac surgery department in leading corporate hospitals. Dr. Bhatnagar is an expert in handling complex bypass surgeries, high-risk surgeries, redo and re-redo coronary bypass surgeries. He has a patient base in almost all parts of India and regularly operates international patients too. He was appointed by Maharashtra Government as a Visiting Specialist Cardiac Surgeon in 2003.
Dr. Bhatnagar was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Mahaveer International Trust in 2015. He has also received Dr. Purshottam Singh Award from IMA, GEMS International Award and Dr. SN Mathur Oration Award, among many others.
Dr. Prateek Bhatnagar had done M.Ch in cardiothoracic surgery from the prestigious PGI Chandigarh, in 1990. He subsequently did Fellowship in heart surgery from Australia and trained for 4 years with the most outstanding heart surgeons in Sydney and Melbourne – Prof. Brian Buxton, Dr. Alan Farnsworth and Dr. Roger Mee, while receiving expertise in coronary bypass surgery, valve repair and replacements, paediatric heart surgery and heart transplants.
Dr. Bhatnagar topped in MBBS in 1982 winning 10 gold medals. He was awarded as one of the outstanding graduates of GSVM Medical College in the last 50 years, at the Golden Anniversary celebrations of the medical college in 2007.
